Subject: E-Link: Ecotechnology for Sustainable Development
********Subject: ECOTECH'94: Computer Conference
Intl Conf. on Ecotechnology for Sustainable Development (ECOTECH'94)
January - October 1994
FOCUS
The exploitation of natural resources for our primal needs of food, fuel,
fibre, shelter and health has frequently resulted in the rapid depletion of
natural resources, degradation of the environment and has endangered the
carrying capacity of our supporting ecosystems. Sustainable development is
a basic strategy for change aimed at conserving and protecting remaining
resources and the environment.
The focus of this conference is on the use of ecologically and
environmentally sound technologies and practices to sustain the long-term
development of agriculture, forestry and health in different ecosystems and
communities; e.g. rural, coastal communities and cities. These
ecotechnologies may be related to the production or use of fuel, food,
fibre and medicine, conservation of natural resources and protection of the
environment.
WHERE
ECOTECH'94 has 4 components. Electronic mail will be used to bridge all
activities and link the participants.
(A) a face-to-face conference in Beijing (Oct 1994)
(B) a few face-to-face regional workshops (Oct 1994)
(C) several face-to-face local seminars (Jan-Sept 1994)
(D) a computer conference (Jan-Oct 1994)
The COMPUTER CONFERENCE (Jan-Oct 1994)
**************************************
It will enable participants to present full text papers by email and permit
public discussion of these papers. Papers and discussion messages will be
published in the proceedings. Submission of papers are welcomed and may
deal with any of the 4 themes.
Theme 1: UNSUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES
This theme covers practices and technologies that are wasteful and which
result in the depletion and degradation of natural resources, such as
deforestation, salinization, desertification, etc). The scope also includes
practices and by-products which cause or increase pollution of air, water
and land. The objective of this section is to enable us to point our
fingers at unsustainable technologies and to recommend improvements or to
suggest and give greater focus on better and existing alternative
technologies or practices.
Theme 2: PRINCIPLES AND HISTORY OF ECOTECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
This theme invites papers dealing with, for example: approaches and
concepts on ecotechnology and sustainable development; and policies and
strategies for accelerating eco-sustainable development and natural
resource management. Religion, rituals and socio-economic factors can
greatly influence people's concepts and practices in living in harmony with
nature and sustainable development. Were ancient cultures sustainable -
what remains and why they are disappearing ?.
Theme 3: IDENTIFICATION AND PROMOTION OF SPECIFIC ECOTECHNOLOGIES AND PRACTICES
Theme 3 will cover papers describing specific indigenous and modern
technologies and practices which may be related to livelihood activities in
agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry and forestry. They may deal with
food (indigenous foods, fermentations); energy and fuel (bioenergy and
biofuels, solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, tidal, electro-chemical, hydro-
electric, renewable energy); human and animal health (alternative and
herbal medicine); pest control (e.g. microbial or plant pesticides),
biofertilizers (e.g. composts, microbial inoculants, green manure); natural
fibres; etc. Papers on non-agricultural technologies or natural resource
conservation and management are also invited. These may include
technologies for recycling or to maximise the use of resources and other
alternative and appropriate technologies.
Theme 4: INTEGRATED ECOTECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND PROGRAMS
The theme focuses on integrated systems which are used by tribes and
villagers, rural inland communities, coastal and river communities, and in
cities. It welcomes success stories and project descriptions for e.g. mixed
and integrated farming systems, integrated pest control and resource
management systems, etc. This section also covers descriptions of national,
regional and international projects or programs related to ecotechnology
and sustainable development.
GUIDELINES: PAPER and its PRESENTATION
A paper need only be between 250 and 400 lines in length, and max 75
characters per line. It should include:
(a) title of paper
(b) names(s) of authors (first name, FAMILY NAME(s))
(c) postal address(es) and email, phone and fax
(d) abstract (less than 30 lines)
(e) references (max 10 full references)
Papers may be submitted at any time but before Aug 31, 1994; an early
submission would be appreciated to facilitate the planning of the
conference. Please send your paper to the Network Manager
(eng-leong_foo_mircen-ki@searn.sunet.se)
On an agreed date, your paper will be posted to an appropriate mailing
list for a 2-week public discussion.
MAILING LISTS
ECOTECH'94 has currently 2 main mailing lists. It will create new or
use existing lists for the presentation and discussion of papers.
(1) ET-ANN: for announcements (scientific programs, FAQs, etc). To
receive future announcements, please address your email to:
listserv@searn.sunet.se and write the message:
SUB ET-ANN <YOUR NAME>,<ORGANIZATION)
(name and organization should not be more than 38 characters)
(2) ET-PARTI: for participants to introduce themselves (e.g. work
& interests, your name, postal address, phone & fax, email,
etc). ET-PARTI welcomes short (less than 75 lines)
descriptions of projects; organization profiles and
information dealing with sustainable development,
ecotechnology, or information related to ECOTECH'94 themes
and topics. To post messages to ET-PARTI (i.e. to all
participants), send your email to: ET-PARTI@SEARN.SUNET.SE
To join ET-PARTI, address email to: listserv@searn.sunet.se
with message: SUB ET-PARTI <your name>,<organization>
